Quick answer
- Roaming keeps your Philippine number and works with almost no setup. A travel eSIM usually costs less per GB but is data-only and needs an unlocked, eSIM-capable phone.
- As listed on 29 October 2026, Globe's Roam Surf 2199 gave 7GB for 7 days at PHP2,199. Airalo listed 10GB over 7 days in Japan for US$17. Your bank's card conversion fees come on top.
- Many travellers do both. They keep the Globe or Smart line on for OTPs with data roaming off, and use a travel eSIM for data.
Mag-roaming na lang ba, o bibili ng eSIM? Ito ang tanong ng halos lahat ng Pinoy bago lumipad. Roaming with Globe or Smart is easy because your number just keeps working. A travel eSIM is often cheaper for data. The right answer depends on your trip, your phone and whether you need your number.

How roaming works with each telco
Globe
As described on Globe's roaming page on 29 October 2026:
- Prepaid: roaming activation is automatic, and no load amount is needed to activate it.
- Postpaid: roaming is pre-activated except on select plans. Globe Postpaid customers in selected countries can get all-day data at PHP399 for 24 hours with Roam Surf 399.
- Roam Surf promos: Globe listed, among others, Roam Surf 999 at 3GB for 3 days (PHP999), Roam Surf 2199 at 7GB for 7 days (PHP2,199) and Roam Surf 5999 at 20GB for 30 days (PHP5,999). Globe said these longer-stay offers bring roaming as low as PHP300 a day instead of the standard PHP399 a day.
- Sharing: Globe says you can share roaming data with up to four Globe or TM users.
- Leftover data: Globe says you can keep using leftover GBs when you're back in the Philippines.
- Multi-country: Globe also advertises a one-subscription promo with 1-year validity across 100+ countries. Check the current price on Globe's page.
Smart and TNT
From Smart Help, checked on 29 October 2026:
- Turn it on: Smart Prepaid users text ROAM ON to 333. Smart says you need at least P100 load and should do this at least one hour before you leave.
- Data: Smart says its roaming data packs start at P500 per day.
Smart's roaming pages didn't load fully for us, so check the GigaRoam options on Smart's site or app for the full list.
DITO
DITO's roaming page says:
- You activate roaming in the DITO App, in real time, and DITO suggests doing it before you leave.
- DITO ROAM Mate offers data bundles of 100MB for 1 day, 200MB for 3 days and 500MB for 7 days, plus a call and SMS bundle.
- Roaming data is limited to 4G.
- It only works in covered countries, and your local promos can't be used abroad.
GOMO
GOMO's FAQ says you buy roaming promos in the GOMO PH app or the GCash app, and you need to set your APN to gomo.ph. One important note: GOMO says the promo validity starts as soon as you buy it, even if you're not at your destination yet.
How a travel eSIM works
You buy a data plan from a travel eSIM seller, install it as a second line, and select it for mobile data when you land. Airalo, for example, sells country plans like its Japan eSIM, which it says runs on SoftBank and KDDI. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so calls and SMS still go through your Philippine line or apps.
Apple's travel page lists both routes as normal options: roaming with your existing carrier, or a travel eSIM from a local carrier or worldwide provider.
Worked example: 7 days in Japan
Using prices as listed on 29 October 2026:
- Globe roaming: Roam Surf 2199, 7GB for 7 days, PHP2,199.
- Travel eSIM: Airalo Japan, 10GB for 7 days, US$17. Your bank may add a conversion fee when paying in dollars.
So in this example the eSIM gave more data. But roaming needs no new install or unlocked phone, and Globe lets you share roaming data with up to four Globe or TM users. On a solo trip, the eSIM wins on data. On a family trip where everyone is on Globe, the sharing option may change the maths. Do the same comparison on the day you buy, for your destination.
The combo setup most travellers use
- Keep your Globe or Smart SIM in the phone for calls, SMS and bank OTPs.
- Turn off data roaming for that line.
- Install a travel eSIM and select it for mobile data.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM only if the seller says to.
Apple warns that if you keep both lines on, you might still incur roaming fees from your home line. Airalo's troubleshooting page says that on iPhone you can set roaming per SIM, while on Android roaming usually applies to all SIMs, so Airalo suggests turning off your primary SIM to avoid charges. If you need OTPs on Android, check whether your phone lets you keep SMS on while data roaming is off for that SIM.
Also note that receiving SMS while roaming may still have charges or rules set by your telco. Check your telco's roaming page.
Calls and texts abroad
Data is only part of the bill. Think about calls too:
- Globe: Globe says the IDD minutes included in some roaming promos vary by the country you call, and lists them by region on its roaming page.
- DITO: ROAM Mate includes a call and SMS bundle of 5 minutes of incoming or outgoing calls with 5 SMS, valid for 3 days. DITO also says you need enough load for calls and SMS while roaming.
- Travel eSIM: most are data-only, so you'd call through Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp or FaceTime over data.
If your family mostly reaches you on Messenger or Viber anyway, a data-only eSIM covers you. If your boss or clients call your PH number, roaming or keeping your PH line reachable matters more.
When roaming makes more sense
- Your phone doesn't support eSIM, or it's locked.
- You need calls to and from your PH number all day, for work or family.
- The trip is very short and you only need a little data.
- You're sharing data with other Globe or TM users.
When a travel eSIM makes more sense
- You use a lot of data: maps, socials, video.
- Your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
- You want a fixed price you know before you fly.
- You're going to one country for several days.
Don't forget
- Turn off auto-renew or roaming add-ons you don't need before leaving.
- Check your telco's covered countries. DITO, for example, says its roaming only works in covered destinations.
- Load enough for Smart. Smart asks for at least P100 load to activate roaming.
- Check GOMO timing. GOMO says roaming promo validity starts on purchase, so don't buy days before your flight.
- Screenshot your plan details. Save the promo name, data amount and expiry so you can check usage abroad without guessing.
Frequently asked questions
