Japan eSIM for Filipinos: How to Choose One
Japan eSIM options for Filipino travellers compared: networks, data-only vs with number, unlimited fine print, hotspot, refunds and Globe or Smart roaming.

Quick answer
- Most Japan travel eSIMs are data-only. They ride on Japanese networks such as SoftBank, KDDI or Docomo, depending on the seller, so check which network a plan uses.
- On 29 October 2026, Airalo's Japan eSIM started at US$4 for 1GB over 3 days and Saily's at US$3.49, as each listed it. Unlimited plans have fair use limits, so read them.
- Keep your Globe or Smart SIM for OTPs, but turn off its data roaming, or you may pay roaming rates on top of your eSIM.
Japan trip na. Bago ka mag-book ng pocket wifi o mag-avail ng roaming, tingnan mo muna ang eSIM. For most Filipino travellers with a newer phone, a Japan eSIM is the simplest way to have data from the moment you land at Narita, Haneda, Kansai or Fukuoka.
This guide compares how the main sellers describe their Japan eSIMs, using each seller's own page checked on 29 October 2026. We don't rank by speed because we haven't tested them in Japan ourselves.
TravelESIM.ph is an independent guide run by Dominet BV. We're not a mobile network, telco or eSIM seller, and we don't sell or activate SIMs. Some links on this site may be affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them. eSIM brands and telcos we mention may not pay us anything. That never changes what we write. Read our affiliate disclosure. Prices and plans change often, so check the seller's page before you buy.
Before you buy: two checks
- Your phone supports eSIM. Dial
*#06#. If you see an EID, it does. Our sister site has a full compatible phones guide. - Your phone is unlocked. Apple says your iPhone can't be locked to a carrier if you want to use another carrier's eSIM abroad. On iPhone, look for "No SIM Restrictions" under Settings, General, About.
What to compare in a Japan eSIM
The network underneath
A travel eSIM seller uses one or more Japanese mobile networks. As listed on 29 October 2026:
- Airalo: its Japan eSIM, called Moshi Moshi, says it operates on the SoftBank and KDDI networks and covers all of Japan, including Okinawa and Hokkaido.
- Saily: says it connects to local carriers including KDDI and SoftBank.
- Klook: its Japan eSIM listing is titled "Softbank 5G / IIJ (Docomo) 4G LTE".
- Holafly and Ubigi: their pages we checked describe 4G and 5G coverage but didn't name the Japanese network in the parts we read.
Why it matters: coverage differs by network in rural areas and mountains. Saily's page notes that remote areas such as rural Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps can have patchier coverage for any carrier.
Data-only or with a number
Most Japan travel eSIMs are data-only. You can still use Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp and FaceTime calls over data.
- Airalo, Klook, Holafly and Ubigi described their Japan or travel eSIMs as data-only on the pages we checked.
- Saily says you can add a US phone number with a calls and texts plan, after identity verification. That's a US number, not a Japanese one.
If you need to receive OTPs from your Philippine bank or GCash, keep your Globe or Smart SIM on as a second line. More on that below.
Fixed GB or "unlimited"
Unlimited plans are popular, but read the fair use line:
- Airalo: its unlimited Japan plans listed "lower speed rate of 1 Mbps after 3 GB usage per day".
- Saily: says its unlimited plan gives 5 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps for the rest of the day.
- Holafly: says operators may apply a fair usage policy temporarily, for no more than one day, to manage traffic.
1 Mbps is fine for maps and chat, slow for video. If you'll stream or upload a lot, a big fixed-GB plan may suit you better.
Hotspot
Sharing data with your barkada or family matters on group trips:
- Saily: says every Japan plan includes hotspot tethering.
- Holafly: says you can share 1 GB a day by hotspot, so a 7-day plan includes 7 GB of sharable data.
- Ubigi: says hotspot is allowed on its plans.
If several people need data all day, compare this with pocket wifi in our eSIM vs pocket wifi guide.
When the plan starts
- Airalo: its help page says validity usually starts when the eSIM connects to a network in the coverage area, but some plans start on installation. Check the plan's validity policy.
- Saily: says plans activate automatically when you arrive, and every plan has a 180-day activation period.
Refunds
- Airalo: refund requests go through the app, are paid as Airmoney (in-app credit), and expired or fully used eSIMs aren't eligible.
- Holafly: says you have up to 6 months to request a refund, subject to its refund policy.
Read the full policy on each seller's site before paying.
Prices as listed on 29 October 2026
A few anchors so you have a sense of scale. These change often, so open the seller's page for current prices.
- Airalo listed its Japan eSIM from US$4 for 1GB over 3 days, and 5GB over 30 days for US$11.
- Saily listed its Japan eSIM from US$3.49, and a 5GB, 30-day plan for US$10.99.
We didn't find peso prices or GCash and Maya payment confirmed on the seller pages we checked. Check the payment options at checkout, and watch for card conversion fees from your bank.
Your Globe or Smart line in Japan
Two common setups:
Setup 1: eSIM for data, Philippine SIM for OTPs. Keep your Globe or Smart SIM on for calls and SMS, set the travel eSIM as your data line, and turn off data roaming on your Philippine line. Apple's travel page says that if you keep both lines on, the travel eSIM is used for data but you might still incur roaming fees from your home line. Airalo's troubleshooting page says that on iPhone you can turn on roaming per SIM, so keep it off for your primary SIM. On Android, Airalo notes that data roaming usually applies to all SIMs, so it suggests turning your primary SIM off to avoid charges.
Setup 2: roam with your telco. Globe lists roaming data promos such as Roam Surf 999 for 3GB over 3 days at PHP999, as listed on 29 October 2026. That's simpler but usually costs more per GB. We compare both in our roaming vs eSIM guide.
Install and connect: step by step
- Buy the eSIM in the seller's app or site while you're still in the Philippines.
- Install it on Wi-Fi at home. Check the plan's validity policy first.
- Label the line, for example "Japan".
- On landing, turn the eSIM on and select it for mobile data.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM only if the seller's instructions say so. Many travel eSIMs need it.
- If it doesn't connect, Airalo's help page suggests checking airplane mode, the APN, data roaming, picking the network manually, switching from 5G to 4G, and restarting.
Which type fits your trip?
| Your trip | What to look at |
|---|---|
| Solo, 5 to 7 days, maps and socials | A mid-size fixed-GB plan from a seller on a major network |
| Heavy video or work calls | Unlimited, after reading the daily cap |
| Family or barkada sharing | Hotspot rules, or pocket wifi |
| Japan plus Korea or Taiwan | Regional plans, or a separate eSIM per country |
| Need a number for calls | A plan with a number, or keep your PH line on |
Japan plus another country
Going to Japan and Korea, or Japan and China, on one trip? Holafly's destination list on 29 October 2026 included combined "Japan and Korea" and "Japan and China" options, and its Japan page suggests a regional Asia plan for multi-country trips. The other choice is a separate eSIM per country, which lets you pick the best network in each place. Compare the total price of both before you buy.
Common mistakes
- Leaving data roaming on for your Globe or Smart line. That's how surprise roaming charges happen.
- Buying the wrong country. Airalo's refund page lists this as a common mistake, for example Austria instead of Australia.
- Deleting the eSIM to fix a problem. Ask the seller's support first, and only delete it if they tell you to.
- Not reading "unlimited". Check the daily full-speed amount.
