Quick answer
- Mainland China eSIMs often don't cover Hong Kong or Macao. Airalo and Klook both said so on 29 October 2026, so buy a combo or separate eSIMs if your trip includes them.
- Airalo and Klook listed their China eSIMs on China Unicom. Airalo's China eSIM started at US$4 for 1GB over 3 days as listed that day.
- Follow Chinese law and each app's terms. We don't give advice on getting around local rules, and we can't verify sellers' claims about which apps work.
Pupunta ka sa Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou o Shenzhen? Or maybe a Hong Kong and Shenzhen combo? China trips need a bit more planning than Japan when it comes to data. Coverage areas, phone models and local rules all matter, so let's go through what to check.
We used each seller's own China listing, checked on 29 October 2026. We haven't tested speeds in China.
TravelESIM.ph is an independent guide run by Dominet BV. We're not a mobile network, telco or eSIM seller, and we don't sell or activate SIMs. Some links on this site may be affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them. eSIM brands and telcos we mention may not pay us anything. That never changes what we write. Read our affiliate disclosure. This page is about mobile data coverage only. Follow Chinese law and each app's terms while you're there.
Mainland China is not Hong Kong or Macao
This is the most common mix-up. For mobile data, mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao are usually sold as separate destinations.
- Airalo said its China eSIM does not include Hong Kong or Macao, and told buyers to choose a dedicated eSIM for those.
- Klook listed its China eSIM as covering all of mainland China, excluding Hong Kong and Macau. It sells a separate Hong Kong eSIM on CSL.
- Holafly's destination list included a combined "Hong Kong, Macau and China" option.
- KKday showed multi-country Asia eSIMs that listed China among other countries.
So if your trip is Hong Kong plus Shenzhen, or Macau plus Zhuhai, buy either a combo plan that names every place, or one eSIM per destination.
Planning a Hong Kong or Macao leg
If you're flying into Hong Kong and crossing to Shenzhen, or doing Macau and Zhuhai, map out which days you'll be where. Then choose:
- One combo plan that names every place on your route, if the days are mixed and you cross often.
- Two eSIMs, one for Hong Kong or Macao and one for the mainland, if you'll spend a block of days in each. Klook, for example, listed a separate Hong Kong eSIM on CSL alongside its mainland China eSIM on 29 October 2026.
With two eSIMs installed, you only switch the data line when you cross. Label each one clearly so you pick the right line at the border.
Which network the plan uses
As listed on 29 October 2026:
- Airalo: its China eSIM, called Chinacom, said it operates on the China Unicom network, as a 5G data-only eSIM.
- Klook: its China eSIM listing was titled "China Unicom".
Other sellers may use other networks. Check the listing before you buy. Airalo also described its China eSIM as rechargeable online, so you can add data to the same eSIM instead of installing a new one.
Prices as listed on 29 October 2026
A few anchors only. Check the seller's page for current prices.
- Airalo China: 1GB for 3 days at US$4, and 5GB for 30 days at US$15.50.
- Airalo also listed unlimited China plans, with speed lowered to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day.
Paying in US dollars may add your bank's conversion fee.
Which apps will work?
You'll see China eSIM listings advertising that certain apps work on them. We can't verify those claims, and how data is handled in China is up to the seller and the local network. We won't give tips on getting around local rules or any app's terms. If an app you rely on matters for your trip, for work, family or banking, ask the seller's support before you buy, and have a backup way to reach people, such as SMS on your Philippine line.
Check your phone before you go
- eSIM support. Dial
*#06#and look for an EID. - Unlocked. Apple says your iPhone can't be locked to a carrier to use another carrier's eSIM abroad.
- Where your phone was sold. Apple notes that in China mainland only certain recent iPhone models support eSIM, and that some Hong Kong and Macao iPhones use two nano-SIMs instead. This matters mainly for phones bought there. If yours came from the Philippines, check Settings for an "Add eSIM" option.
Apple also says visitors to mainland China can use prepaid data eSIMs from worldwide providers.
When to install
Install while you still have good Wi-Fi in the Philippines. Airalo's help page says validity usually starts when the eSIM connects to a network in its coverage area, but some plans start when you install. Check your plan's validity policy first.
Roaming instead?
Your Globe or Smart line can be an option too. As listed on 29 October 2026, Globe's Roam Surf 999 gave 3GB for 3 days at PHP999 in covered countries, among other promos. Check that mainland China, and Hong Kong or Macao if you're going there, are on your telco's list of covered destinations. Roaming keeps your number but usually costs more per GB. See our roaming vs eSIM guide for a worked example.
A practical setup for a China trip
- Data: a China eSIM that names its network, set as your data line.
- Calls and OTPs: your Globe or Smart SIM kept on, with data roaming off.
- Hong Kong or Macao leg: a combo plan that names those places, or a second eSIM.
- Before you fly: save your hotel address in Chinese characters and your bookings offline, so a data hiccup doesn't strand you.
- Group trip: check whether the plan allows hotspot before you rely on one phone for the whole group. If it doesn't say, ask support or get one eSIM per person.
Business trips and trade fairs
Going for a sourcing trip or a trade fair? If you'll be on video calls or sending large files, pick a plan with enough full-speed data, and check the fair use line on any unlimited plan. Ask your company's IT team about any tools they require for work, and stick to what's allowed.
How much data to buy
We can't tell you an exact number, because it depends on how you use your phone. A simple way to estimate:
- Light use: maps, messaging and a few photos posted. A small fixed plan may be enough for a short trip.
- Medium use: social media every day, ride-hailing, translation apps. Go a size up.
- Heavy use: video calls, streaming, uploading lots of photos and videos, or sharing a hotspot. Look at bigger plans or unlimited, and read the daily full-speed amount.
Check your phone's data usage screen for a normal week in the Philippines, then divide by seven. That daily figure, times your trip days, is a decent starting point. Add a little extra for navigation in a new city. If the seller offers top-ups, starting smaller and adding data is safer than overbuying.
Questions to ask the seller before you pay
Send these through the seller's app chat if the listing doesn't answer them:
- Which network does this plan use in mainland China?
- Does it cover Hong Kong and Macao, or only the mainland?
- Does the validity start on purchase, on install or on first connection?
- Is hotspot allowed, and is there a cap?
- Can I top up the same eSIM?
- What's the refund rule if it won't connect?
Save the answers as screenshots. If something goes wrong, you'll have them for support.
If the eSIM won't connect
Airalo's troubleshooting steps apply to most brands:
- turn off airplane mode
- make sure the eSIM is on and selected for data
- turn on data roaming for the eSIM if the seller says to
- check the APN
- choose the network manually
- switch from 5G to 4G
- restart the phone
If nothing works, contact the seller through its app before deleting anything.
Frequently asked questions
Does a China eSIM work in Hong Kong and Macau?
Often not. Airalo and Klook both said on 29 October 2026 that their China eSIMs exclude Hong Kong and Macao. Buy a combo plan that names them, or separate eSIMs.
Which network do China eSIMs use?
Airalo and Klook both listed China Unicom on 29 October 2026. Other sellers may differ, so check the listing.
Gagana ba ang mga apps ko sa China gamit ang eSIM?
Hindi namin ma-verify ang claims ng sellers tungkol sa apps. Ask the seller's support before you buy, follow local law, and keep your PH line on for SMS as a backup.
Can I buy a China eSIM before I leave the Philippines?
Yes. Most sellers let you buy and install before you fly. Check whether your plan starts on installation or when it first connects in China.
Is roaming better than an eSIM for China?
Roaming keeps your number and needs no install, but usually costs more per GB. Compare current Globe or Smart roaming promos with eSIM prices on the day you buy.
